Tropical primary forest loss jumped 80 percent in 2024, reaching 6.7 million hectares. Fires drove most of the loss, especially in Latin America.
The data shows how climate extremes, land use pressure and weak enforcement are combining to push deforestation higher. Agriculture remains a major driver, but fire is now the leading cause.
Some regions are showing progress, but overall, forest loss is rising in most of the top countries. The gap between global commitments and on-the-ground action continues to grow.
